Marie's No Count Success story
Welcome to Marie's very inspirational No Count success story: thanks Marie!
I have always loved my food and cooking: my Mom even used to joke that I was born at 1:00pm – lunch time!
A chubby child with a big appetite turned into an even chubbier teenager and bride. As a newly-wed in 1981, I loved the freedom to shop for, and cook, my own food.
I ate everything and too much of it: cheese, pies, biscuits, chocolate, cake, oh yes lashings of cake! I was an incredibly greedy girl.
Amy was born in 1986 and Will in 1988. My greediness and eating for two with both pregnancies meant that after Will was born I was obese and unhappy.
With a two-year-old and a baby, I was tired, short of breath and very unhappy. So I joined Weight Watchers.
I weighed 15st 11lbs and embarked on a 10 year cycle of losing weight and feeling OK then stopping going to class and regaining the weight. I did eventually, 10 years after I had first joined, get to goal. It was fabulous, fantastic and I felt wonderful but I had learned nothing! It took 10 years but eventually I put it all back on, and more: at my heaviest I was 17st 1lb.
I loved sport and, even at my biggest, played netball, cycled, swam and walked but my joints suffered, my blood pressure was high and I was wheezy at times. I was unhappy, unhealthy and, as a nurse, a poor example to my patients.
I would join Weight Watchers, lose, gain, stop going. Then a couple of things happened: Weight Watchers came up with a new plan, the forerunner of No Count - The Core Plan which later became Filling & Healthy, then No Count. This suited me, my big appetite and love of cooking. I did well: not always losing but at least eating well and feeling healthy.
Fast forward to January 2010. Always confident and loving my job as an ITU nurse, I found myself suffering from work related stress. I was in bits, very distressed. I walked into my GP’s surgery. She took one look at me and told me I wouldn’t be going back to work anytime soon. I was offered medication but decided to try lifestyle changes instead: to try to eat properly, sleep well and exercise. I went back to Weight Watchers weighing 14st 1.5lb and embraced the Filling & Healthy plan. By April I was back at work and had lost two stones. It took over three and a half years but eventually, using the No Count plan, on 13th August 2013 I reached my goal of 9st 13 lb - losing almost 60lbs!
On 13th August I will have been at goal for 6 years, my usual weight being +/- 2lb around goal. I retired from nursing 4 years ago and since then have had a hip and knee replacement. My weight loss had gone a very long way to help a speedy, successful recovery from both. I still cycle, Nordic Walk and swim, I look after my three-year-old grandson each Thursday and it’s great to be able to keep up with him! My blood pressure is normal and I stopped having to take inhalers years ago. I feel fit, healthy but most important ‘in control’ of what I eat.
I still eat the No Count way in the week and more or less what I want at weekends and that seems to work for me. It’s great what you pick up from other members and one thing that has worked for me is what I call the five star plan, PLAN/TRACK/EXERCISE/FOCUS/ STAY DETERMINED
For me that is the key to success... worked so far!
